I painted this one thinking about the quiet right after a summer rain, when the pond hasn’t settled yet and every last drop leaves its own ring on the water.
The water is built up in layers of deep teal, with loose white and pale-blue strokes curling into ripples that drift across the whole surface. Lily pads gather in three spots: a big cluster in the lower right, a smaller one on the left, and a few floating along the top edge. Soft pink water lilies are tucked between the pads, and thin reeds poke up through the water. Spreading them out like that keeps your eye wandering around the pond.
I kept it loose on purpose. The canvas weave shows through the paint and you can follow every brushstroke, and that texture carries right over into the print.
It’s a calm piece. It suits a bedroom, a bathroom, a reading corner, or an entryway where you want people to slow down for a second. The teal and green look good with warm wood, white or cream walls, and soft greens, and the pink blooms pick up blush or terracotta accents.
Choosing a size
- 5×7: a small piece for a shelf, desk, or nightstand, or a gift tucked in with a card. The edges are trimmed slightly to fit this shape.
- 8×10: shows the full composition and fits a standard 8×10 frame, or an 11×14 frame with a mat.
- 16×20: big enough to hang on its own over a bed, dresser, or console table. Fits a standard 16×20 frame.
