Heavenly Ace – Acrylic and Oil Painting Print

Ace was my mother-in-law’s much-loved little weenie dog. After Ace passed, I painted this for her so she could remember Ace the happiest way possible: flopped over on the back, paws in the air, completely sure a belly rub was on the way.

Here, this sweet black and tan dachshund is rolled over on a soft bed of pale blue clouds, looking back at you upside down with bright, curious eyes. The black coat is painted in layers of deep charcoal and soft gray, with warm tan markings on the eyebrows, muzzle, chest, and paws. One back leg is kicked up, the front paws are curled, and the ears have flopped wherever they landed.

Little bursts of rainbow drift all through the clouds, a quiet nod to the Rainbow Bridge. Instead of something sad, I wanted it to feel light and peaceful, like Ace is somewhere warm and comfortable, napping in the sky and waiting for the next belly rub.

I painted it with a mix of acrylic and oil, and you can still see the brushwork and the canvas weave, especially in the clouds and Ace’s fur. That handmade texture carries over into the print.

If you’ve loved and lost a dog, especially a little dachshund with a big personality, I hope this one makes you smile. It’s a gentle piece for a bedroom, a reading nook, or a little memory corner next to a favorite photo, and the soft blue and rainbow colors go well with white walls and light wood. It also makes a thoughtful sympathy gift for a friend who is missing a pet of their own.

Choosing a size

• 5×7: a small piece for a shelf, desk, or nightstand, or tucked in with a sympathy card. The edges are trimmed slightly to fit this shape.
• 8×10: shows the full composition and fits a standard 8×10 frame, or an 11×14 frame with a mat.
• 16×20: big enough to hang on its own over a bed, couch, or dresser. Fits a standard 16×20 frame.

Caring for your print

Frame it behind glass or acrylic to keep dust and fingerprints off, and hang it out of direct sunlight so the colors stay bright.
