Some evenings the sky does something so pretty you just have to stop and stare for a minute. This is one of those evenings, on the edge of a lake, right as the sun slips behind the hills.
The sky is stacked with lavender and violet clouds, broken up by glowing streaks of pale mint and buttery yellow where the last of the light is pushing through. Across the water, a dark ridge of hills sits low on the horizon. Below it, the lake catches everything: gold, peach, and soft orange reflections stretched out in long brushstrokes, mixed in with cool blues and violets.
In the foreground, thick, bright green grass is painted in quick, sweeping strokes, so it almost looks like it’s moving in the breeze. On the right, a big old tree leans in toward the water, with warm brown bark and a pale patch at the base. Its branches reach out over the lake, and the leaves are dabbed on in dark, speckled green so you can see the sunset glowing through them.
Gouache dries flat and velvety, almost like a matte poster, and the colors stay bold. You can still see every brushstroke, especially in the grass and the reflections.
It’s a peaceful piece for a living room, bedroom, home office, or a lake house or cabin wall. The purples, golds, and greens look great with warm wood, natural textures, and earthy tones. It also makes a nice gift for someone who loves summer evenings on the water.
